In the book Things Fall Apart, Okonkwo does not acknowledge his female virtues, because the way he sees women, he sees them as maids. They are not really respected as individuals in Umuofia and so he is not used to it in Mbanta. He thinks that they are not truly bonded by love but by a ceremony.

I in my opinion is not shabby. He is very strong and a good leader. When he was young he was a great wrestler and he even was able to defeat the cat, the most feared wrestler. Too bad he is the reason that he had to sacrifice a goat to the gods for breaking the week of peace, in which no one should harm or kill another person. He was consulted be the priests. The reason that he did the beating to ruin the week of peace was not a bad reason. He was just being protective of his 3rd wife's children. He only did also because of how he did not get his third course of his dinner and he got very angry that would have not been acceptable. She went and did a selfish task instead of tend to him which made his mad.
